With the approaching new school year, there are so many items to check off the annual to-do list. With all those appointments and shopping trips to get out of the way, don’t forget to plan a pediatric dentist visit. Although this is a busy time, it is easier to schedule a kid’s dentist appointment when students are not in class.

Just like it appears, pediatric dentistry is children’s dentistry.  A dentist for kids is trained in treating growing and developing mouths. Just like your child’s pediatrician, a pediatric dentist specializes in the proper growth, special needs, and developmental issues common among kids. The difference being a pediatrician is focused on the body, and a pediatric dentist helps maintain oral health.

A dentist for kids typically has completed two years of advanced dentistry training for treating infants aged one through the teen years, and kids with special needs. Pediatric dentists know how to make young patients comfortable, and trips to the dentist more fun.

Is It Necessary to Visit a Pediatric Dentist?

It is a personal choice whether to take your child or children to a pediatric dentist or not. You may decide to have one family dentist, and there is nothing wrong with that option. The most important thing is that your children get regular dental cleanings and exams and that  you are satisfied with the dental care your kids receive.

What Oral Health Issues Will a Pediatric Dentist Look for During an Exam?

A kid’s dentist will perform professional teeth cleaning and do a standard oral exam along with other additional treatments like sealant application when needed. Some potential dental problems a pediatric dentist will typically look for, include the following:

• Cavities or tooth decay
• Problematic thumb-sucking
• Signs of gum disease or other oral conditions
• Mouth injuries like cracked, broken or missing teeth

When Is the Best Time to Visit a Kid’s Dentist?

The best time to schedule a pediatric dentist visit is during the summer or during some other break in the school year. Ideally, parents should try not to disrupt class time or take away from any extra-curricular activities. Children’s dentistry is all about meeting the needs of kids. Therefore, many kid’s dentists provide office hours before school and later in the evening.

Whichever time of year, or hour of the day you choose, be sure to schedule your child’s appointments every six months, or as recommended by your dentist.
