June 6, 2018

Frequent oral cancer screenings are always recommended by our Charm Dental dentist and staff. We advise doing everything in your power to protect your smile and to keep up with your oral health needs. Why is an oral cancer screening needed even if you don’t smoke? We encourage you to continue reading on to find out how they will benefit you and your overall health.

Risk Factors for Oral Cancer

There are several factors, including smoking, that will put you at a higher risk of acquiring oral cancer. These factors include second-hand smoke, alcohol consumption, genetics, and human papillomavirus. There are a variety of other factors that also contribute to this as well.

Warning Signs of Oral Cancer

Regular dental cleanings and exams at least twice a year are beneficial in catching illnesses early on and beginning treatment plans. It is also important to be aware of some of the warning signs of oral cancer. Some of these include:

  • Changes in the texture of your tissue
  • A hoarse voice
  • Frequent sore throats
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • New lumps and bumps

If you are noticing any of these warning signs, then please contact our dental clinic right away for an oral cancer screening.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Your dentist will begin with a visual, oral cancer screening that will help them to assess the need. Your personal dentist may be familiar with your situation and any changes that may occur in your mouth and oral health. They may also choose to use a system such as VELScope. This system helps to diagnose oral cancer in patients early on.
